Former Bellator champion and UFC lightweight contender Michael Chandler has cast uncertainty over the timeline of his anticipated fight against Conor McGregor, News About Nigeria reports.
The potential matchup gained attention when McGregor confidently announced during a talkSPORT interview at Anthony Joshua’s fight that he would face Chandler at UFC 296 on December 16. However, Chandler remains skeptical about the fight’s timing.
In a recent media appearance, Chandler expressed his uncertainty, stating, “It’s happening in December? I’m not holding my breath. But you know I’m ready.”
McGregor’s delayed return is often attributed to his need to re-enter the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) testing pool. A UFC fighter must undergo six months of random drug testing before competing again unless granted an exemption.
Meanwhile, Chandler believes the UFC’s drug testing process could be a factor, but he also noted McGregor’s lifestyle choices as a potential reason for the delay. “We see him on boats more than we see him hitting bags,” Chandler commented.
Despite the uncertainty, Chandler is keeping himself prepared for the potential fight. He emphasized his readiness, saying, “For me, you know I’m ready. You know I’m always staying in shape.”
Chandler at 37 years old, is aiming to maintain his physical condition and professional athlete appearance. He mentioned his commitment to fitness and staying in shape.
While Chandler still holds hope for the McGregor fight to take place later this year in December, he acknowledges the possibility of the matchup spilling over into 2024.
Regardless of the timing, Chandler emphasized the excitement around the potential clash between himself and McGregor, one of the sport’s biggest stars.
