Prominent Nigerians have continued to criticise the President of the Nigerian Senate after he announced on national television that the assembly clerk had credited senators’ accounts so they may enjoy their break, News About Nigeria reports.
After realising he had made the remark on national television, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, attempted to retract it, claiming that prayers had been conveyed to the lawmakers as they went on recess.
However, Nigerians have continued to express their outrage and disappointment with the discovery, which comes at a time when Nigerians are still suffering from the difficult economic conditions imposed by the recent termination of fuel subsidies.
Remember that the President Bola Tinubu-led government had previously pleaded with Nigerians to bear the weight of the elimination of fuel subsidies in exchange for a better future.
However, Senate President Akpabio’s statement has sparked fury among Nigerians who believe that the government should shoulder the pain of the elimination of fuel subsidies as well.
Reacting to the now-viral video, former Kaduna senator Shehu Sani explained that crediting legislators was usually done ‘under the mute button’
“Crediting the Legislator’s accounts is done under the mute button, the Uncommon Senate President mistakenly pressed the alarm,” Mr. Sani said.
On his part, popular Nigerian social media influencer, Mr Macaroni lamented that while Nigerians were struggling to make sacrifices, the lawmakers were sending money to themselves to enjoy their holidays.
“The Senate President has sent very Expensive prayers out of the insufficient blessings of over 200 Million people to himself and his already blessed colleagues at the National Assembly,” Mr Macaroni said.
“These are the Leaders that have asked struggling Nigerians to make sacrifices if they want things to work in the country. So while Nigerians are going through unbearable hardship, our leaders are sending money to themselves to enjoy holidays. Who are those that should be making sacrifices if not for our leaders? Do our leaders understand that leadership is about service, selfishness and sacrifice?? Why do the poor people of Nigeria have to pay for the luxurious lifestyle of the leaders?? Why??? This isn’t leadership!!!” he added.
Expressing her displeasure with the development, Funmi Oladiti lamented that Nigerian lawmakers had made themselves rich with the country’s common wealth.
