The Nigerian Super Falcons have crashed out of the ongoing FIFA Womens World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

The Nigerian women’s national team failed to progress to the next stage of the tournament after a strong group stage performance, suffering a 4-2 defeat against England on penalties.

Lauren James was sent off in regular time, but Chloe Kelly’s winning strike in the penalty shootout sent the European champions to the quarter-finals of the tournament.

News About Nigeria recalls that Lauren James was handed a straight red card following the unprofessional tackle on Alozie. However, despite being at a disadvantage, England was able to prevent the Nigerian ladies from scoring a goal, taking the game to a penalty shootout where the European side secured a 4-2 win over the resilient Super Falcons.

The development further blurs Africa’s hopes of winning its first-ever World Cup after South Africa crashed out from the tournament following a 2-0 defeat at the hands of the Netherlands on Sunday. the development however places Morroco as the only African side remaining the the tournament.

Morroco is billed to take on France on Tuesday as it battles to be the only African side to make it past the round of 16 stage.

Despite the loss, Nigerians have continued to applaud its female national team for putting up a great fight against the European side. Coming into the game as an underdog, many predicted an easy ride for the European side.

England will face either Colombia or Jamaica in the quarter-finals of the competition.
