Renowned football pundit Ian Wright has urged the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), to release the wages of the Super Falcons after the girls pulled a stunning 3-2 victory against Australia, News About Nigeria reports.
The Falcons of Nigeria on Thursday topped their group in the ongoing 2023 FIFA Women’s world cup in Australia. Team Nigeria was the better side in the jaw-breaking encounter that has now gathered reactions from fans and pundits alike.
Most popular on the list is Ian Wright, a former English professional footballer turned pundit.
Wright took to social media to voice his annoyance over the unpaid wages of the Super Falcons, urging the Nigerian Football Federation to pay the girls their deserved wages.
Using the hashtag @thenff 🇳🇬 to address the NFF, Wright’s passionate call for pay parity has ignited a fresh debate on the issue. In his tweet, Ian Wright straightforwardly stated, “Pay them!!!!!!”
Recall that the Super Falcons manager Randy Waldrum had earlier bemoaned the challenge that his team faced before the competition, on account of poor funding by the NFF.
He stated that his team did not get enough support from the federation and was managing the funds available to them.
Just before the tournament kick-started, the Super Falcons also complained of unpaid wages which got Wright wondering why, especially with the team’s commitment and top performances so far in the world cup.
His Tweet has been widely read as a clarion call to the country’s sports body to pay the girls their earned wages and such other remunerations that should accrue to them.
