The National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has announced a “total and indefinite strike action”, News About Nigeria has learned.

This is in response to their demands that have not been met by the Federal Government.

On Tuesday evening, the resident doctors made an announcement in a statement where they talked about the main problems they are upset about.

Among their demands, the resident doctors emphasized the immediate payment of the 2023 Medical Residency Training Fund (MRTF), a crucial aspect of their training and development.

Additionally, they called for the swift release of the circular on one-for-one replacement, a measure aimed at ensuring adequate staff strength.

They also emphasized the importance of getting paid the skipping arrears, which has been a problem for a long time.

Even though the situation is very serious, the strike is disappointing because the Speaker of the House of Representatives sincerely asked the association not to go ahead with it.

A meeting was held between the Speaker and the representatives of NARD on Monday, in a last-ditch effort to find a resolution and avert the impending strike.

As the strike commences, patients might experience problems getting medical help, and other healthcare workers may need to work harder to cover for the doctors who are on strike.

The Ministry of Health is now under pressure to quickly deal with the concerns of the resident doctors. They want the talks between the doctors’ group (NARD) and the government to start again right away in order to find a lasting solution to stop the strike.
