On Monday, Olusegun Obasanjo, a former president, criticized Nigeria’s failure to live up to promises since the country’s independence in 1960.

At a public launch of the book “Reclaiming the Jewel of Africa,” written by the former minister of industry, trade, and investment, Olusegun Aganga, Obasanjo virtually spoke. The occasion took place in Abuja, News About Nigeria reports.

According to the former president, the nation has let down Africa and the rest of the world, he attributed the country’s lack of development to previous administrations’ inconsistent policies.

Obasanjo said, “Over the last 63 years, we have not lived up to expectations. We have disappointed ourselves; we have disappointed Africa; we have disappointed the black race; and we have disappointed the world.”

Along with Obasanjo, another former president who also spoke virtually, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, said that any administration’s guiding principles should be consistency in policy, its implementation, and equity.

The book lunch was attended by many other important dignitaries in the country.

Olawale Edun, President Bola Tinubu’s special adviser on monetary policy, who attended the event in his place, suggested the steps Nigeria must take to become self-sufficient.

Among the attendees at the book launch were former ministers and heads of government parastatals, representatives of the diplomatic community, and traditional leaders.

The author, Aganga, urged the Federal Government to develop policies that would encourage investment success and also prepare the country for socio-economic development.
