The House of Representatives has ordered the immediate suspension of the planned increase in electricity tarriffs, News About Nigeria reports.
This was made known during a plenary session on Thursday.
A Kano lawmaker from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) identified as Sani Madaki sponsored the motion.
It was supported by the lower legislative chamber.
They went ahead to pass it for resolution.
Madaki highlighted the problems of the proposed tariff hike,
He cried out that it may lead to more problems for Nigerians who are already battling with harsh economic realities.
Considering the current economic challenges, the House said that such an increase would be too much a burden for the citizens who are struggling to survive.
Taking this matter seriously, the House has tasked its power committee with engaging in discussions with NERC.
Rumour has it that the electricity tariffs may soar by 40% due to the escalating prices of petrol.
According to the rumors, this increase was set to take effect from July 1.

Ugochinyere Ikenga advised that the recent hikes in premium motor spirit popular known as petrol should be, suspended, investigated and amended.
However, the House voted against the amendment
