Kano State Government Grants Life-Changing Overseas Scholarships to Persons with Disabilities, News About Nigeria reports.

The Kano State Government has unveiled a groundbreaking initiative offering overseas scholarships exclusively to Persons Living With Disabilities (PWDs) within the state.

This visionary move aims to ensure that individuals with disabilities have equal access to educational opportunities, aligning with international conventions.

Alhaji Umar Haruna Doguwa, the State Commissioner for Education, enthusiastically shared the news during a recent meeting with representatives from Mercy Corps and the Coalition of Disabled Self Advocacy Network Group, both prominent non-governmental organizations.

He expressed the government’s determination to empower PWDs and foster their integration into society, stating, “We will surely offer scholarships to those with First Class and Second Class Upper degrees, including those with disabilities, to encourage them to become productive citizens and live meaningful lives.”

According to News About Nigeria, Commissioner Doguwa unveiled plans to establish inclusive schools throughout the state and emphasized the importance of creating inclusive facilities in existing public schools.

These measures seek to ensure that individuals with disabilities are fully embraced in the state’s development agenda.

To further support PWDs, the government recently provided 150 NECO examination registration forms, enabling them to pursue higher education.

Commissioner Doguwa urged the beneficiaries to seize this opportunity and strive for improved living standards.

Highlighting the government’s commitment to collaboration, the Commissioner welcomed partnerships with NGOs and development partners to enhance the welfare of the people and ensure the sustainability of policies and programs.

Nafisa Amadu Abubakar, Policy and Advocacy Coordinator at Mercy Corps, along with representatives of physically challenged individuals, urged the government to support a peace-building program and ensure that PWDs are integrated into all developmental plans.

Commissioner Doguwa pledged to collaborate with development partners to address critical educational needs in the state, particularly focusing on teachers’ professional development, girl-child education, access to digital education, and education for vulnerable children.

This comprehensive approach aims to improve educational outcomes and empower the youth of Kano State.
