Leaders of the Southeast region are gearing up for a crucial meeting with, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as they grapple with the escalating insecurity plaguing their states.
News About Nigeria reports that the gathering, which took place on Monday evening, saw prominent figures including the President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, and lawmakers from the region convene to discuss strategies for fighting the prevailing challenges.
Senator Hope Uzodinnma, the Chairman of the South East Governors and Chairman Progressives Governors Forum hosted the meeting in Imo State.
Notably absent were the governors of Enugu, Anambra, and Abia states, although Governor Uzodinnma clarified that the meeting received the endorsement of his counterparts despite the short notice.
Chief Iwuanyanwu, speaking on behalf of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, revealed that the governors had unanimously agreed to collaborate closely and tackle the disruptive sit-at-home order issued by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), which has had adverse effects on the region’s economy and social fabric.
However, specific details regarding the outlined strategies were not disclosed.
Highlighting the fact that insecurity is a nationwide concern, Chief Iwuanyanwu stressed the need for collective efforts that extend beyond the Southeast region.
In pursuit of this goal, the governors, lawmakers, and Ohanaeze leadership intend to engage President Tinubu, seeking his support and cooperation in restoring peace to the troubled region.
“The problem of insecurity cannot be solved by the Southeast governors alone,” Chief Iwuanyanwu emphasized.
“We have resolved that the leadership of Ohanaeze, the governors, and lawmakers get in touch with the President. The problem in the South East is too big for the governors alone.
It is a Nigerian problem, and the President will give support to the governors.”
Governor Uzodinnma echoed these sentiments, acknowledging that security matters fall under the exclusive jurisdiction of the federal government and cannot be solely addressed by the Southeast governors.
He announced plans to lead his colleagues to the Presidential Villa, where they will meet with President Tinubu and appeal for the federal government’s intervention in addressing the pressing security challenges.
“While the Federal Government has supported us in the past, we believe that they can do more,” Governor Uzodinnma stated.
