In a move to protect lives and preserve public property, Governor Babagana Umara Zulum has implemented a ban on scavenging activities throughout Borno State, News About Nigeria reports.
Recent discoveries of vast quantities of metal scraps, suspected to be parts of government property, prompted Governor Zulum’s decisive action.
During his extensive tour of project sites, the governor encountered significant amounts of discarded metal items, some of which were believed to belong to federal authorities and the Borno State Government, according to NTA reports.
News About Nigeria reports that Governor Zulum shed light on the dire consequences of scavenging, lamenting the loss of nearly a thousand lives over the past few years due to this hazardous practice.
He expressed deep concerns over the audacity of certain individuals involved in scavenging, who resorted to stealing public property, including street light poles and telecommunication company tanks.
The governor revealed instances where local government vehicles fell victim to destruction at the hands of scavengers.
He emphasized that such illicit activities cannot be allowed to persist without consequences.
With the aim of restoring order to business activities and safeguarding the well-being of scavengers themselves, Governor Zulum issued a sweeping ban on scavenging across all twenty-seven local government areas within the state.
This decisive action is expected to curb the wanton destruction of public property and ensure the safety of all residents.
Governor Zulum’s resolute stance sends a clear message: Borno State will not tolerate the harmful practices of scavenging, safeguarding both lives and the integrity of public assets.
