Prominent PDP Gubernatorial Aspirant Parts Ways, Embraces APC, News About Nigeria reports.
In a surprising twist of events, Engr. Gideon Ikhine, a notable figure within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and a governorship hopeful during the 2020 Edo gubernatorial election, has chosen to sever ties with the party.
Speculation is rife that irreconcilable differences between Ikhine and Governor Godwin Obaseki are at the root of this decision.
News About Nigeria was made to understand that in a letter addressed to the Chairman of PDP Ward 7 (Ukpenu/Ujolen/Emuhi) in Ekpoma, Esan West local government area, dated July 8, 2023, Ikhine expressed gratitude for his time within the party, stating,
“It has been a great honour to contribute to the growth and success of this party over the years, with the People’s Democratic Party recording outstanding results from my Ward all through the 24 years of working with you.
My commitment to the people of Ward 7, Esan-West Local Government, and Edo people remains firm and resolute to keep serving them in other capacities.”
While Ikhine did not explicitly state the reasons behind his departure, insiders suggest a widening rift between him and Governor Obaseki.
When asked about his future political ambitions and party affiliation, Ikhine responded, “I am still in the process of consultation, but I will be joining the APC in a few days. I plan to hold a press conference soon to clarify any uncertainties.”
It is worth noting that Ikhine was the first gubernatorial aspirant to step down in favour of Governor Godwin Obaseki during the 2020 election.
He graciously donated his campaign office and structure to support Obaseki’s bid for a second term after being disqualified by the APC.
