Sodiq Oladebo, an admission seeker, has come forward to accuse members of the Nigeria Police Force of extorting him of N20,000 while he was traveling from Osun to Benin, Edo State.
News About Nigeria reports that the incident occurred on Saturday along the Ilesa Expressway in Osun State when police officers at a checkpoint stopped the Sienna vehicle in which Oladebo and other passengers were traveling.
According to Oladebo, the officers searched their bags and found nothing incriminating.
Despite this, they allegedly intimidated him and demanded N100,000, threatening to take him to the police station if he didn’t comply.
Oladebo explained that the money they had seen in his Palm Pay application was N99,000, which his brother had given him to purchase an Interim Joint Matriculation Board (IJMB) form for his university admission process.
Oladebo; “We left Old Garage Park in Osun State, and were going to Benin, Edo State. Our vehicle was stopped by the policemen. They checked the passenger at the front and later asked me to come down from the vehicle to identify my luggage.
“They searched and didn’t find anything incriminating. He took my phone from me, unlocked it but didn’t find anything incriminating on it. He returned my phone and said he would take me to the station except I pay N100,000. They had seen N99,000 in my Palm Pay application and my brother gave me the money to purchase the IJMB form.”
After a series of arguments with the police officers, they reportedly settled on extorting N20,000 from Oladebo. He transferred the money to a Point-of-Sale operator, as instructed by the officers, and was allowed to leave. The transaction receipt displayed a transfer of N20,000 to Delight Enterprise at 11:34 am on Saturday.
The young man lamented that his money was still in the possession of the officers.
The young man added; “I transferred the money to a Point-of-Sale operator whom the officers called to the location and they allowed me to go. The policemen were four and in a black Hilux van. My money is still with them.”
