The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has taken legal action against Hudu Yunusa-Ari, the suspended Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Adamawa state, News About Nigeria reports.
Hudu Yunusa-Ari is facing a six-count charge filed by the electoral umpire.
The charges were presented to the high court in Yola, the capital of Adamawa state, on July 6.
INEC took this action after carefully reviewing the police’s case file, which revealed substantial evidence against Yunusa-Ari.
The charges relate to his alleged misconduct during the governorship election in Adamawa.
Yunusa-Ari had previously been arrested in connection with the election irregularities.
However, he was released on administrative bail but instructed to report to the headquarters of the Nigerian Police Force (NPF) every weekday.
The decision by INEC to press charges against Yunusa-Ari demonstrates the seriousness with which the electoral commission is addressing electoral misconduct.
By carefully examining the evidence provided by the police, INEC found sufficient grounds to take legal action against the suspended REC.
While the exact details of the charges have not been disclosed, it is clear that INEC has identified multiple counts on which the suspended REC will be held accountable.
The court will assess the evidence presented by both the prosecution and the defense and make a judgment based on the law and facts of the case.
The legal process will allow Yunusa-Ari the opportunity to present his defense and challenge the allegations made against him.
The court will ultimately determine his guilt or innocence based on the evidence presented and the application of the law.
