Former light-welterweight and welterweight champion Ricky Hatton has opened up about his decision to support anti-suicide charities, News About Nigeria reports.
The retired British boxer, known for his impressive 43-0 record, revealed that his experience of losing to Mayweather Jr in 2007 triggered suicidal thoughts.
Speaking on a talk show with talkSPORT, the 44-year-old shared that his mental health spiraled after the event, leading him to contemplate taking his own life on multiple occasions.
Hatton acknowledged that this was an incredibly challenging period for him, causing years of mental torment and persistent suicidal thoughts. However, after surviving those dark times, he made a personal commitment to actively support anti-suicide charities. For years, he has been involved with CALM (Campaign Against Living Miserably).
“I do so much for these mental health and anti-suicide charities because of the experiences I’ve been through,” Hatton explained.
“I’ve witnessed important moments in life, such as becoming a grandfather and seeing Campbell [Hatton] turn professional. I’ve also encountered personal conflicts, like the fallout with my former trainer Billy Graham, which I eventually resolved. But during that phase, I came dangerously close to ending my own life. I didn’t want to be here anymore.”
Recognizing the positive transformation his life has undergone, Hatton aims to assist others who find themselves in similar circumstances. By using his platform and influence, he hopes to make a difference in the lives of those battling mental health challenges.
“If people are more likely to listen to Ricky Hatton, then I feel like I’m doing a good job,” he expressed.
“We’ve all been through a challenging time, especially with the recent COVID pandemic. We’ve been confined to our homes, separated from our loved ones, and now we’re faced with a cost of living crisis. Mental health has become even more relevant because people’s lives have been severely impacted. But there is help available for those in need.”
Hatton’s unwavering commitment to supporting mental health causes serves as a testament to his personal journey and a reminder that even in the darkest of times, there is hope and assistance available.
