Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has expressed his belief that Nigeria is ready for a female President in order to advance and join the ranks of developed nations.
News About Nigeria reports that Obasanjo, who served as the country’s leader, emphasized the importance of giving women the opportunity to lead the nation after decades of male leadership since independence.
Obasanjo made these remarks during the 5th edition of the Egba Dialect Debate and Choral Competition for Secondary Schools in the Ogun Central Senatorial District, held in Abeokuta.
Speaking at the event, he stressed that for Nigeria to regain its strength and foster development, power must be shared equally between genders.
The former President’s advocacy for female leadership reflects a growing recognition of women’s capacity to contribute to national progress and governance.
Obasanjo’s call for gender equality in leadership positions aligns with the global movement towards greater female representation and empowerment.
He said, “From my own view if we want the country to grow, we should consider both genders because a hand can’t carry a load to the head alone.
“You can do it as you want, but it should be done as it is supposed to be, we can gain experience from both genders, what’s the difference between the genders? Only a female can get pregnant for nine months and a male can’t. That’s the only difference between us.
“As for me, there’s nothing preventing the female gender to be the president of our country.”
Obasanjo’s statement resonates within a Nigerian society that has witnessed the emergence of influential women in various sectors, including politics, business, and civil society.
