Haruna Jilantikiri, a member of the Adamawa State House of Assembly, has taken a bold step to identify with the masses amidst the soaring cost of petrol by opting to use an electric bicycle instead of a car.

News About Nigeria understands that in light of the increased price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol, the lawmaker’s decision is seen as a symbolic gesture to highlight the plight faced by ordinary citizens.

According to a report by SaharaReporters, Jilantikiri was spotted on Thursday, June 1, riding his electric bicycle to the state assembly. This act of choosing an eco-friendly mode of transportation over his personal car is seen as a demonstration of solidarity with the people who are burdened by the recent removal of fuel subsidy.

In Adamawa State, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPC) has set the price of petrol at N550 per litre following the removal of subsidy. This significant increase has resulted in financial strain for many individuals and businesses across the country.

Jilantikiri, who represents the Madagali State Constituency, explained that he made the decision to use an electric bicycle as a means of commuting in order to mitigate the impact of the exorbitant petrol prices on his daily activities.

By doing so, he hopes to draw attention to the urgent need for the Nigerian government to address the issue and alleviate the hardships faced by the public due to the fuel price hike.

The legislator, who is also the Chief Whip of the state House of Assembly lamented that “the product is currently being sold at the sum of N550 to N700 per litre at filling stations including that of the government, I do not think that Nigerians can afford it”.

“We are supposed to pack our cars and use bicycles to identify with the electorate because I don’t think they can afford to drive cars or ride motorcycles any longer,” Jilantikiri added.
