Second Niger Bridge

The federal government of Nigeria has officially designated the Second Niger Bridge as the Muhammadu Buhari Bridge, honoring the country’s outgoing president.

This is following consultations from the Southeast governors.

They agreed that the second Niger Bridge should be named after Buhari.

News About Nigeria reports that this decision comes after the bridge was opened on December 15, 2022, to alleviate traffic congestion in the southeastern region during the holiday season.

Initially, the bridge was accessible for a period of one month, catering to the increased travel demands of the festive period.

However, on January 15, 2023, it was temporarily closed to the public to allow for the finalization of the Loko-Oweto Bridge and the construction of connecting roads between Benue and Nasarawa states.

Recently, on May 15, the bridge was fully reopened to motorists, with minor adjustments such as lane markings still in progress.

It is noteworthy that the completion of the Second Niger Bridge is one of seven significant projects that President Buhari is expected to inaugurate on Tuesday, symbolizing his administration’s enduring legacy.

Bashir Ahmad, the special assistant on digital communication to President Buhari, announced on Tuesday that the 1.6 km long bridge has been officially named after the president himself.

In a celebratory tone, he expressed gratitude for the newly christened Muhammadu Buhari Bridge and extended his appreciation to President Buhari for his contributions.

The formal name of the bridge will now be recognized as the Muhammadu Buhari Second Niger Bridge.

By bestowing President Buhari’s name upon this essential infrastructure, the government aims to honor his leadership and acknowledge his dedication to the development and progress of Nigeria.

The Second Niger Bridge stands as a testament to the commitment of the current administration to improve the country’s transportation network and enhance connectivity between regions.
