In a recent development, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has confronted Zamfara State Governor, Bello Matawalle, over his allegations of bribery against the EFCC Chairman, Abdulrasheed Bawa.

The governor, who is currently under investigation for alleged corruption, claimed during a BBC Hausa interview that Bawa had demanded a substantial bribe of two million dollars from him, News About Nigeria reports.

However, the EFCC swiftly dismissed the governor’s claims, asserting that he had provided no concrete evidence to support his allegations.

Governor Matawalle’s accusations have further heightened the ongoing power struggle between him and the anti-graft agency, casting doubt on the integrity of the EFCC and its chairman.

During the interview, the governor expressed his mistrust towards Bawa, insisting that he was being investigated solely because he refused to comply with the chairman’s alleged demand for a bribe.

Responding to Governor Matawalle’s claims, the EFCC’s spokesperson, Wilson Uwujaren, issued a statement expressing disappointment in the governor’s lack of evidence. Uwujaren described the governor’s resort to mudslinging as a desperate act of someone clutching at straws.

The EFCC emphasized its commitment to not engage in a mud fight with a suspect under investigation for corruption and accused the governor of attempting to divert attention from his own case.

Uwujaren called on Governor Matawalle to go beyond mere allegations and provide concrete evidence to substantiate his claims. The EFCC believes that tangible evidence would lend credibility to the governor’s accusations and shed light on any potential wrongdoing within the commission.

The call for transparency and accountability resonates strongly in the fight against corruption, especially considering the EFCC’s crucial role in combating financial crimes and preserving public resources.

This clash between the EFCC and the Zamfara State governor highlights the significance of due process, impartiality, and adherence to the rule of law.
