Festus Keyamo, the campaign spokesperson of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has responded to the Labour Party’s call to cancel the 2023 presidential election due to the controversy surrounding the 25% of votes in Abuja.
News About Nigeria reports that Keyamo emphasized that the February 25 presidential election could not be canceled.
The Labour Party had requested the cancellation of the election based on the controversy surrounding the 25% of votes in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The party also stated that the court should allow the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, to be sworn in until a substantive president is elected.
In response, Keyamo stated that electoral jurisprudence would not overturn the overall results of an election if electoral malpractice in just one state does not substantially affect the declared result.
He added that even if a hundred TV documentaries were produced on alleged malpractice in one state, it could not upturn the overall result of the election.
Keyamo further advised the Labour Party not to be deceived and to understand how electoral jurisprudence works.
He explained that evidence admissible in court to prove over-voting may be different from what is used to make documentaries.
Therefore, the overall results of an election cannot be canceled based on any alleged malpractice if the malpractice does not substantially affect the declared result.
Keyamo also disclosed that the APC’s presidential candidate, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, beat the Labour Party’s candidate, Peter Obi, by a margin of 2,693,193 votes.
Keyamo advised the Labour Party to sit back and be entertained by documentaries while awaiting the outcome of any petition pending in court.
