Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets defender Yahaya Lawali has reportedly caught the attention of Barcelona scouts following his impressive performances at the Under 17 African Cup of Nations held in Algeria.
Despite the Eaglets’ elimination from the competition, Lawali’s displays on the field have evidently impressed Barcelona, who is now rumored to be considering a move for the talented player in the near future, according to sources gathered by News About Nigeria.
At just 16 years old, Lawali showcased his abilities in Nigeria’s four games during the tournament, earning the man of the match accolade in the opening two matches against Zambia and Morocco.
His consistent performances also led to his inclusion in the group stage’s best eleven (XI) as recognized by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
A potential move to Spain and joining Barcelona would undoubtedly serve as a significant boost for the young right-back’s career.
Lawali would join a long list of Nigerian footballers who have successfully transitioned to larger stages after their impressive displays at the Under-17 level.
Among such notable international players are Victor Osimhen, Kelechi Iheanacho, Ahmed Musa, Wilfred Ndidi, and many others.
Osimhen, who currently plays for Italian side Napoli, played a pivotal role in helping the club secure its first title in 33 years. Throughout the season, he netted an impressive total of 23 goals and provided four assists, significantly contributing to his team’s success.
Both Iheanacho and Ndidi currently ply their trade for Leicester City in the English Premier League. Musa, on the other hand, represents the Turkish side Fatih Karagumruk, although his contract with the club is set to expire in June.
Lawali, who is currently a member of Mahanaim FC, initially attracted interest from other European clubs in Belgium and France.
However, Barcelona has reportedly surpassed their competitors with an enticing offer, solidifying their position as front-runners in securing the young talent’s signature.
