The Ugandan political landscape is in a state of shock and mourning following the tragic news of the death of Col Charles Okello Engola (retd), the Minister of State for Labour, Employment and Industrial Relations.

The minister was reportedly shot dead by his own bodyguard, Private Wilson Sabiti, on Tuesday, May 2 at his home in a Kampala suburb, News About Nigeria report.

According to Police spokesperson Fred Enaga, the shooting occurred at close range while the minister was entering his vehicle to go to work. The bodyguard, Sabiti, is reported to have fled the scene and later shot himself dead at a nearby trading center.

The Ugandan government has launched an investigation to establish the motive of the shooting, while the people of Uganda are mourning the loss of a great leader. Engola was known to be a dedicated public servant who worked tirelessly for the welfare of his people, and his death has left a huge vacuum in the government.

The incident has once again highlighted the need for increased security measures for government officials and public figures in Uganda. It has also raised concerns about the screening and monitoring of the mental health of security personnel.

In a statement, President Yoweri Museveni expressed his condolences to the family of the deceased and called for a thorough investigation into the matter. “We will ensure that justice is served and that those responsible for this heinous act are brought to book,” he said.
