The Nigerian Police have arrested the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Abuja, Barrister Hudu Yunusa-Ari, for declaring controversial results during the supplementary elections in Adamawa State, News About Nigeria gathered.

The arrest came two weeks after Ari went into hiding following his announcement of Aisha ‘Binani’ Dahiru of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the winner of the 2023 governorship election in the state, while the collation of results was ongoing.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) subsequently nullified Ari’s decision and suspended him. President Muhammad Buhari also ordered a full investigation into the electoral commissioner and the security personnel around him during the declaration.

INEC concluded the election and announced the incumbent governor, Ahmadu Fintiri of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), as the authentic winner.

The police have taken Ari into custody and are interrogating him to ascertain the motives behind his actions. Other officials and individuals involved in the saga are also being questioned by the team in charge of the case.

The Inspector-General of Police has assured Nigerians of the commitment of the Force to ensuring justice is served in this case, and all individuals involved will be investigated and prosecuted in line with the provisions of the law.

This incident highlights the need for transparency and integrity in the electoral process. It is important for all stakeholders to uphold the tenets of democracy and work towards ensuring free, fair, and credible elections in Nigeria.

As investigations continue, it is important to avoid any form of prejudice and allow the law to take its course. The rule of law is vital to our democracy, and all individuals, regardless of their status or position, must be held accountable for their actions.

The arrest of the REC in Abuja is a step towards restoring confidence in the electoral process and ensuring that justice is served. It is important for all parties involved to cooperate with the authorities to ensure a speedy and fair resolution of the matter.
