All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Ibrahim Bomai, has been declared the winner of the Yobe South Senatorial District election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

This announcement follows the successful completion of the supplementary polls conducted on Saturday, April 15, 2023, in the zone.

The Returning Officer, Abatcha Melemi, declared the result at the Federal College of Education (Technical) Potiskum, revealing that Bomai defeated his closest opponent of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Halilu Mazagane.

Bomai, who polled a total of 69,596 votes, emerged victorious over Mazagane, who polled 68,885 votes, with a margin of just 711 votes.

It is worth noting that INEC had earlier declared the election in the zone inconclusive due to overvoting at the Manawachi polling unit in the Fika Local Government Area of the state.

However, with the conclusion of the supplementary polls, the Returning Officer declared Bomai as the winner, bringing an end to the long-drawn electoral process.

In his declaration, the Returning Officer did not entertain questions from journalists, stating that his mandate was solely to announce the winner of the election.

Following the declaration, the APC candidate expressed his gratitude to the people of Yobe South for their support, promising to work tirelessly to ensure that the interests of the constituents are adequately represented at the Senate.

The Yobe South Senatorial District is one of the key political zones in the state, with a high voter turnout during elections. The zone comprises six Local Government Areas, namely Fika, Potiskum, Nangere, Jakusko, Yusufari, and Bursari.

The announcement of the winner of the election has put an end to the political tension and anxiety that had characterized the district since the election was declared inconclusive.

The successful conduct of the supplementary polls and the peaceful declaration of the winner by INEC has been commended by various stakeholders, including civil society groups, political parties, and international observers.

It is hoped that the winner of the election will fulfill his campaign promises and work towards the betterment of the people of Yobe South.
