Panic As Fire Razes Enugu Market

A 43-year-old man, Yusuf Hassan, has been arrested by the Ogun State Police Command for allegedly setting the apartment of his former lover ablaze.

The building located at 127, Old Scholar Palace, Igan Road, Ago-Iwoye, in the Ijebu-North Local Government Area of the state was said to be the residence of the suspect’s ex-lover, Busayo Falola.

News About Nigeria gathered that the suspect committed the act after his ex-lover refused to reconcile with him.

The incident was confirmed in a statement on Saturday by the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Oyeyemi.

SP Oyeyemi said the suspect was arrested after tha complaint was lodged by the 62-year-old landlady of the house, Adejoke Salau at the Ago Iwoye divisional headquarters.

According to the PPRO, the landlady said she discovered that the building was on fire after she heard noise in her compound around 1:15am and came out, while other tenants were trapped in the house.

She noted the they were able to rescue the three trapped tenants following timely intervention of the neighbours.

Busayo was said to have screamed and ran into the room of another tenant, which then caught the attention of other tenants, only for them to discover flame coming out from Busayo’s room.

Yusuf Hassan was hunted and apprehended but initially denied any knowledge of incident but later opened and confessed.

The police spokesman added that, “He confessed further that he intended to burn his ex-lover in her apartment because he had tried his possible best to reconcile with her all to no avail, and that was the reason he bought N500 petrol, poured it into her room through the window and set it on fire”.

Meanwhile, the suspect would be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation and possible prosecution.
