Two people have reportedly lost their lives after being attacked by gunmen in Abeokuta, News About Nigeria reports.
This was confirmed in a statement by the public relations officer of the Ogun State Police Command, Omolola Odutola, on Monday.
She noted that the incident occurred in the early hours of Monday, adding that two others sustained bullet injuries from the attack.
She stated that it was a case of carjacking, noting that the gunmen confronted the occupants of a black Mercedes Benz in the parking lot of Diamond Dumplings, GRA, Abeokuta, demanding the keys to the car.
According to her, the gunmen opened fire when they sensed resistance, killing two and injuring two others.
She added that the Divisional Police Officer from Ibara, who responded to the distress call, rushed the victims to the hospital, where two of them were declared dead by the doctor on duty.
The statement reads, “The incident occurred at around 12:30 a.m. in the parking lot of Diamond Dumplings, GRA, Abeokuta.
“Three armed men in an unregistered black Toyota Hilux confronted the occupants of a black Mercedes Benz GLE 350 with a DLA license plate, demanding the car keys.
“The assailants opened fire, hitting one Ola (surname unknown), Shobanke Oluwatimileyin, and two others.
“The Divisional Police Officer from Ibara, responding to distress calls, arrived at the scene, secured the area, and transported the victims to the hospital.
“Upon arrival, the attending doctor confirmed two fatalities, while the other two individuals are receiving medical attention at the Federal Medical Centre, Idi Aba, Abeokuta.”
Odutola further noted that a preliminary investigation has commenced to examine the factors leading to the two deaths and to assess any potential links to cult activities.
She assured the public that they would be informed about the progress of the investigation in the coming days, adding that efforts are being made to arrest the fleeing suspects.
