Unknown Gunmen Attack Checkpoint, Kill Policeman in Rivers

A policeman has been killed in Rivers State after some unknown gunmen attacked a police checkpoint in the oil-rich state on Friday.

The unidentified gunmen were said to have stormed a police checkpoint along Marine Base in Port Harcourt.

According to information gathered by News About Nigeria, the gunmen who were in a salon car drove past the checkpoint while shooting at the officers on duty but only one of the policemen was hit by a bullet.

An eyewitness who pleaded anonymity said the incident caused pandemonium as people scampered for safety upon hearing gunshots.

She said,” I was sitting at my shop this morning attending to customers. Next thing people started running

“There was shooting, but I don’t know who shot. Later, police operatives started gathering and the bad boys killed a policeman.

The eyewitness also revealed that the officers were coming from the opposite street when the gunmen met them at the checkpoint and opened fire at them, causing the death of one of the policemen.

The Rivers State Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the incident, saying they have been ordered to immediately arrest the gunmen by the Commissioner of Police, CP Okon Effiong.

She stated, “the command is aware and we have launched a search for the daredevil hoodlums to be apprehended and made to face the law

“All tactical units and police divsions have also been alerted to be on the lookout. Calm has returned to Marine Base.

The motive of the attack is yet unknown.
