The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a warning regarding a batch of contaminated Sprite 50cl glass bottles that are currently circulating in Nigeria, News About Nigeria reports.
In an official statement released by NAFDAC, it was revealed that the discovery of the contaminated product came about after a consumer complaint was received and subsequently investigated by the post-marketing surveillance unit of the agency.
The statement disclosed that the implicated batch of Sprite 50cl glass bottles, bearing the manufacturing date of April 23, 2018, and identified as BN: AZ6 22:32, was found to be contaminated with foreign particles.
More than five crates of this batch were affected.
To address the situation, NAFDAC has taken samples from the tainted batch for laboratory analysis in their own facility.
Additionally, the agency has instructed all zonal directors and state coordinators to carry out thorough surveillance and eliminate any remaining stock of the contaminated product.
In order to ensure proper monitoring, NAFDAC has specifically instructed the Nigerian Bottling Company Limited (Abuja plant), the manufacturer of Sprite, to initiate a recall of the implicated batch and provide detailed reports to NAFDAC.
NAFDAC has also made an appeal to individuals who possess the contaminated Sprite 50cl glass bottles to surrender their stock to the nearest NAFDAC office for proper disposal.
Simultaneously, the agency has urged distributors, retailers, and consumers to exercise caution and refrain from consuming, selling, or distributing any unwholesome products.
This serves as a precautionary measure to prevent any potential health risks associated with the consumption of the contaminated batch.
In light of this situation, NAFDAC said it is essential for all parties involved to prioritize public safety and act responsibly.
