Former English professional footballer Jermaine Pennant has blasted Manchester United for offering £55m for Chelsea’s Mason Mount, News About Nigeria reports.
Pennant who made 350 appearances for 15 clubs during his professional career said that United is only “cheeky” to sign a top-quality player like Mount for such an amount.
He argued that Mount is in the League of players like Jude Bellingham who Real Madrid signed for £120million and Declan Rice who West Ham is demanding £100million for his release.
He blasted United for demanding the player at a giveaway price, instead of offering an amount worthy of the player’s repute which he has shown at both club and country levels.
“He’s in the last year of his contract but also, he’s a fantastic player.
“If we’re talking about the figures that have been thrown about, £120million for Bellingham, £100million for Declan Rice, I think Chelsea are right to hold out for more, for his value.
“I like to put things in perspective, if you’re looking at £50 million for James Ward-Prowse, who is getting valued at that in the Championship at Southampton, £55million for Mount would be a steal, a bargain in my eyes,” Pennant revealed.
He backs Chelsea for maintaining their ground and not giving in to pressure to sell the 24-year-old midfielder who started his career at the club.
“Attacking minded players are always valued that little bit higher as well, so Chelsea is holding out for the right value and I think that Manchester United are just trying to be a little bit cheeky to get him as cheap as chips.”
Recall that Chelsea recently rejected Man United’s third offer for Mount, maintaining their demand for £65million. However, The Red Devils are said to be preparing another bid, as they are not giving up on the player who has made up his mind to leave the West London club.
