Katsina Govt House Razed By Fire

A fire that erupted in Jardines de Villafranca, a retirement home in the Northeastern Spanish town of Villafranca de Ebro in the early hours of today (Friday) killed 10 people.

News About Nigeria gathered that the tragedy happened at about 5 am in the morning and the deceased had all been deposited in a morgue.

Confirming the tragedy in a post on its official X account on Friday, the Aragon Emergency Services revealed that an investigation is currently ongoing on the incident.

The post reads, “At least 10 people have died in a fire at a nursing home in Villafranca de Ebro that occurred this morning. (More information to be provided).”

According to reports by Spanish media, there were 82 people inside the home when the blaze broke out at around 5 am.

Speaking on the deaths, the local media revealed that the fire was concentrated in one room, but the smoke spread throughout the residence leading to the death of the ten residents.

“Fortunately that room has a security door which prevented the fire from spreading but the causes of the deaths are likely due to smoke inhalation. We cannot really prove this as investigation is still ongoing,” the media added.

Also speaking on the incident, the head of the Aragon government, Jorge Azcon, said he was “shocked” and was “suspending public engagements as a sign of mourning.”

He also prayed that the souls of the deceased rest in peace while calling for a proper investigation into the cause of the fire outbreak.

The Jardines de Villafranca residence was opened in 2008 as a home for the elderly but had recently specialised in helping elderly people with mental health problems.
