Following the controversy that played out at the Libyan airport when the Super Eagles went for their return leg match, the disciplinary panel of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has slammed the Libya Football Federation (LFF) with the sum of $50,000.
CAF also awarded three points and three goals to the Super Eagles for the missed Libya game.
Recall that the Super Eagles were left stranded for over 13 hours upon arrival at the Al-Abraq airport in Libya a few weeks ago.
News About Nigeria reports that the CAF decision was made public on Saturday in a statement signed by the CAF’s Chairperson of the Disciplinary Board, Ousmane Kane.
In the statement, Kane noted that the decision to award Nigeria the points was taken after the disciplinary committee it set up to look into the matter found Libya guilty of the inhumane treatment meted out to the Nigerian senior men’s football team.
Speaking on the $50,000 fine, CAF ordered that the Libya Football Federation must pay it within 60 days.
The statement partly reads, “The Libya Football Federation is found to have breached Article 31 of the African, Cup of Nations Regulations as well as Articles 82 and 151 of the CAF Disciplinary Code, and that the match No.87 Libya v. Nigeria of the CAF African Cup of Nations Qualifiers 2025 (scheduled to be played on 15 October 2024 in Benghazi) is declared lost by forfeit by Libya (by a score of 3-0).”
The 5-man disciplinary committee consists of Mr. Ousmane Kane (Senegal) Chairperson, Ms. Njeri Onyango (Kenya) Vice-Chairperson, Mr. Felix Golbassia (Tchad) Member, Mr. Patrick Shale (Lesotho) Member, and Mr. Norman Arendse (South Africa) Member.
