With less than 24 hours to the Kano State Local Government Election which is slated for October 26, 2024, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has withdrawn from the poll.
News About Nigeria reports that the party’s decision was made public by the Chairman of the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC), Prof. Sani Malumfashi on Friday evening during a press conference in Kano, the state capital.
Malumfashi noted that the election would still be held in line with the decision of the State High Court ruling that directed the commission to conduct the election on Saturday.
He said, “The main opposition party, which is the APC, has withdrawn from the election as they did not participate in any of the processes. The commission has completed all arrangements to conduct the election in the state on Saturday, in line with the ruling of a Kano State High Court on Friday.”
Meanwhile, a Federal High Court in the State has also sacked all 44 chairmanship and councillorship candidates of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).
The court’s judgement was delivered on Friday by Justice Simon Amobeda following a case filed by Engineer Muhammad Babayo and a faction of the NNPP against the party’s leadership.
In his judgement, Justice Amobeda ruled that the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) should accept a new list of candidates submitted by the faction led by the recognised State Chairman, Dalhatu Shehu Usman, in accordance with the party’s constitution.
He also ordered that KANSIEC must recognize the list of candidates submitted by the plaintiffs.
