The Department of State Services (DSS) has issued a warning regarding a potential threat of violence associated with upcoming nationwide protests.
News About Nigeria reports that the protest, set to last for ten days starting Thursday, August 1, has raised concerns about safety and security from different groups, with many appealing to the youth to boycott it.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Peter Afunanya, Director of Public Relations and Strategic Communications at the DSS, revealed that certain elements are planning to exploit the protests to incite chaos and extreme violence across the country.
The DSS mentioned that while peaceful protest is a democratic right, intelligence has indicated that the motives behind these protests are politically driven.
The agency stated that there are plans to use the anticipated violent outcomes to tarnish the reputation of both federal and state governments, with the aim of inciting public discontent and possibly instigating a regime change at the national level.
Afunanya explained that the DSS has identified the funding sources, sponsors, and collaborators involved in the plot.
Despite the serious nature of the threat, the DSS said it has chosen not to respond with immediate aggression.
Instead, the agency has employed non-violent measures, including dialogue, stakeholder engagement, and diplomatic efforts, to persuade the organisers to abandon their plans.
The DSS urged all protest groups to refrain from engaging in any actions that could lead to disorder and violence.
The agency emphasised the importance of peaceful protest and encouraged citizens to consider the broader consequences of such actions, particularly the potential for loss of life and property damage.
The statement also called on various societal leaders and groups, including parents, traditional and academic institutions, and civil society organisations, to advise their members and affiliates against participating in the planned protests.
The DSS stressed the need for unity and constructive engagement to address grievances without resorting to violence.
The agency said it would work with other security and law enforcement bodies to maintain peace and order.
The DSS also provided contact information for the public to report any concerns or seek further information regarding the situation.
