Court Interferes As Rivers Assembly Crisis Deepens

Following the continuous crisis in Rivers State House of Assembly, the Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt, has ordered the two factions of the State’s Assembly to halt further deliberations on the matter until the case before it is determined.

News About Nigeria learnt that the factional speaker of the Assembly, Edison Ehie, who is in support of Governor Siminialayi Fubara, had approached the court, seeking an order to stop the Speaker of the pro-Nyesom Wike faction, Martin Amaewhule, from presiding over the Assembly.

In a ruling on Tuesday, the judge, Justice Phoebe Ayua, gave an order to all parties involved to respect the court by suspending any other action on the matter as the case is now in court.

The judge also adjourned the hearing of the case to November 27, 2023.

It can be recalled that a crisis erupted in Rivers Assembly on October 30, 2023, over an attempt by pro-Wike lawmakers to impeach the state governor.

This is coming after an explosion on the night of October 29 rocked the Assembly, destroying multi-million naira valuables.

The crisis further degenerated as policemen allegedly teargassed Governor Fubara when he visited the Assembly on the morning of October 30 to determine the extent of the fire outbreak.

The State’s Assembly complex had since been under lock.

While Ehie is leading the faction that passed a vote of confidence on Governor Fubara, Amaewhule champions the pro-Wike faction.

Although the Governor of Rivers state had on November 9 stated that he would never quarrel with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, because he remains his principal, the crisis in the state has still not been resolved.
