The Labour Party has debunked rumours making the rounds that they want to merge with the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in order to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress in the 2027 general elections, News About Nigeria reports.
The presidential candidate of the PDP in the February 25 election, Atiku Abubakar, suggested on Tuesday that opposition parties should come together in order to defeat the ruling APC in the next presidential election.
However, in a statement released on Thursday by the spokesman of the LP, Obiora Ifoh, he explained that the Labour Party has not discussed any merger with any other political party.
Ifoh also stated that such rumours are targeted at humiliating the Labour Party.
In his words, “Kindly disregard the sensational news making the rounds, which suggests that the Labour Party is working out a merger arrangement with any other political party. It is purely a news item twisted and sensationalized by a section of the media to embarrass the Labour Party.”
According to him, Atiku’s call was only a proposal which he felt would be good for the nation.
Ifoh further noted that every Nigerian should be interested in making democracy work in Nigeria because the country is currently practising autocracy.
The LP spokesman also noted that the party has yet to discuss its next move since the conclusion of the 2023 general elections.
He urged Nigerians to disregard such sensational stories, which are purported to emanate from the Labour Party, noting that the party has its official platform used to disseminate its information.
