As the deadline given by The Economic Community for West African States, ECOWAS to the Niger junta government elapses, the leadership of ECOWAS will be meeting on Thursday as the union seeks means to return Niger to Democratic rule, News About Nigeria reports.
Announcing the development in a statement on Monday, the organisation detailed that the meeting will focus on the Niger political situation.
“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and chairman of the authority of Heads of state and Government of the Economic Community of the ECOWAS leaders will be considering and discussing the political situation and recent developments in Niger during the summit,” statement by ECOWAS read.
The announcement comes as the President Bola Tinubu-led union continues to seek various means to return the West African nation to democratic rule without triggering any form of altercations.
Nigeria’s president who doubles as the chairman of ECOWAS had earlier promised to do everything within its power to return the country to Democrat rule.
In this regard, the regional body is considering the use of force to return President Mohamed Bazoum to power.
However, many prominent Nigerians have urged the Bola Tinubu-led union to explore other means rather than an invasion.
ECOWAS had in July issued a 7-day ultimatum to the Niger Junta leadership to return the country to democratic rule or face invasion.
