Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central, has denied receiving any formal notification about her recall from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
This response came after INEC announced it had sent her a recall notice and informed the leadership of the National Assembly, led by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, of the development.
According to a letter dated March 26 and signed by INEC’s Secretary, Mrs. Rose Oriaran Anthony, the commission confirmed that it had received a petition from voters in Natasha’s constituency requesting her recall.
The letter sighted by News About Nigeria also stated that the process follows Section 69 of the Nigerian Constitution and Clause 2(a) of INEC’s Regulations and Guidelines for Recall, 2024.
It added that a copy of the notice had been published on INEC’s website and forwarded to the presiding officer of the Senate.
The notice read: “Pursuant to Section 69 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended), I write to notify you of the receipt of a petition from representatives of registered voters in your constituency seeking your recall from the Senate.
“This notification is in line with the provision of Clause 2(a) of the Commission’s Regulations and Guidelines for Recall, 2024.
“This letter is also copied to the presiding officer of the Senate and simultaneously published on the Commission’s website.”
When asked about the matter, Senator Natasha stated that she had not been served any letter and would consult her legal team to clarify the situation.
Earlier, INEC had confirmed that those behind the recall petition had updated their records to comply with legal requirements by submitting their phone numbers and email addresses.
Following this update, the electoral body resumed the recall process against the senator.
