The All Progressives Congress (APC) has called on the Federal Government to halt local government allocations in Osun State following the swearing-in of new council chairmen by Governor Ademola Adeleke.
News About Nigeria reports that party insisted that the process was illegal and disregarded a Court of Appeal ruling.
Governor Adeleke conducted the swearing-in ceremony despite ongoing legal disputes over the validity of the elections.
The APC maintained that the Court of Appeal had reinstated the previously sacked local government officials, whose tenure is set to expire in October 2025.
The party argued that Adeleke’s move violates the Nigerian Constitution, which guarantees that local governments must be run by democratically elected officials.
The APC also criticized the governor for allegedly appointing caretaker committees after removing elected officials in 2022.
They described the fresh election conducted on February 22, 2025, as a waste of public funds and a disregard for the rule of law.
The party urged the governor to challenge the matter in the Supreme Court rather than pushing for new elections.
Meanwhile, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde warned the APC against escalating tensions in Osun.
Speaking at the swearing-in event, he urged all parties to follow legal procedures rather than resorting to self-help.
He emphasized that past political crises in the region should not be repeated.
Governor Adeleke, however, defended the process, stating that the election was conducted in line with legal requirements.
He assured the newly sworn-in chairmen and councilors that their mandates were legitimate and encouraged them to focus on governance.
He also directed them to avoid the local government secretariats, citing a state court ruling affirming the vacancies before the election.
