In a bid to stop the spread of the sex tapes of the Director General of the National Financial Investigation Agency, Baltasar Engonga, the Government of Equatorial Guinea has imposed restrictions on the use of WhatsApp.
News About Nigeria gathered that citizens of the country can no longer share or download multimedia files using WhatsApp.
This development follows an order from the country’s leadership to telecommunications operators to implement measures to prevent the further release of Engonga’s sex tapes.
The government’s move to restrict WhatsApp has sparked various discussions among the citizens as many are protesting on the grounds that it would hamper their productivity, adding that not everyone is interested in seeing the tapes.
Speaking to local media in the country, Ahora EG, a citizen who spoke anonymously, lamented the restriction, saying, “Is it really fair that everyone should suffer the consequences of the actions of a few? The authorities have not yet provided any explanation for the reasons behind this restriction, as well as the duration of it. At a time when information and communication are more vital than ever, the lack of transparency only aggravates citizens’ concerns.”
Also, the local media quoted another resident saying, “Should an entire country pay for the actions of a few? The decision to restrict access to essential communication functions seems disproportionate and punitive, affecting thousands of users who, in addition to using these platforms for entertainment, also rely on them for work and educational activities.”
