The Trade Union Congress (TUC) has urged the general public to disregard rumors circulating that the Benue State Government has approved N40,000 as its new minimum wage for workers in the state.

News About Nigeria reports that this clarification was made by the Chairman of the Benue State chapter of the TUC, Gideon Akaa, on Friday.

According to Akaa, labor leaders are still in negotiation with the Benue State government over the new minimum wage.

He dismissed the trending report on social media that the state government had presented N40,000 as the new minimum wage.

Akaa, speaking with newsmen, noted that the state government and the labor unions have yet to agree on any amount.

He further revealed that the workers had suggested an amount between N75,000 and N77,000, adding that they believe Governor Hyacinth Alia’s administration is committed to the welfare of workers and will make a fair decision.

He said, “I’m not aware of the rumor of N40,000. We held a meeting with the government, and the negotiation is still ongoing. To the best of my knowledge, nobody has mentioned anything about N40,000. So, I don’t know where the rumor is coming from. The government has not agreed to pay any amount; we are still negotiating.

“Once the negotiation is concluded, we will sign an agreement. As the negotiation is still ongoing, we have several figures but are yet to settle on an amount. We have N75,000 and N77,000 on the negotiation table. I urge the general public to kindly disregard the rumors.”
