On Friday, the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) called on the President Bola Tinubu-led Federal Government to release all the detained #EndBadGovernance protesters.
The human rights group also tasked the Federal Government to withdraw all charges against them.
News About Nigeria reports that SERAP made the call following the collapse of a minor protester during arraignment today at the Federal High Court in Abuja.
Photos and videos circulating on social media, which show that the protesters are malnourished and unkempt, have sparked various reactions online, with many berating the Tinubu-led administration.
Reacting to the development in a statement shared on its official X handle, SERAP demanded that President Tinubu’s administration promptly investigate the ill-treatment of #EndBadGovernance protesters in prison and prosecute those responsible.
SERAP wrote: “The Tinubu administration must promptly investigate the apparent ill-treatment of #EndBadGovernance protesters in prison and prosecute those responsible. The administration must immediately and unconditionally release those detained and drop all charges against them.”
Similarly, Senator Shehu Sani also called for the release of the protesters, describing their detention as both unfortunate and shameful for Nigeria’s democracy.
Speaking in a post on his X account, the former Kaduna lawmaker urged the Federal Government not just to release the protesters but also to facilitate their return to their homes.
“The detention of minors for their participation in protests is most unfortunate and shameful for our country’s democracy. The Federal Government should withdraw the charges against them and return them to their states,” he wrote.
