Three Rivers Police Officers Arrested For Alleged Extortion Of Motorists

The Rivers State Police Command has arrested three of its officers for allegedly extorting money from motorists at the busy Rumuokoro flyover in Port Harcourt, News About Nigeria reports.

In a statement released on Wednesday, police spokesperson Grace Iringe-Koko confirmed the arrests, which followed reports of the officers’ activities on social media.

The CP Monitoring Unit, led by CSP Grace Wonwu, conducted surveillance before apprehending the officers on October 29, 2024.

The arrested officers have been identified as Inspector Sarah Anendei, Inspector Caroline Promise, and Inspector Christiana Jatau.

They were accused of engaging in unprofessional conduct while out of uniform.

During the investigation, authorities recovered money that had been extorted from motorists.

The police statement added that the officers’ actions were captured on video, providing clear evidence of their misconduct.

The officers are currently in detention and are awaiting disciplinary action.

The Rivers State Police Command reiterated its commitment to maintaining professional integrity within the force and assured the public that any personnel found guilty of misconduct would be held accountable.

“Their misconduct was captured on video by a mobile phone, providing clear evidence of their actions. During the immediate on-site investigation, the operatives searched the officers and recovered the money taken from the motorists, marking a swift response in upholding ethical practices within the Rivers State Police Command.

“The officers are currently detained and awaiting appropriate disciplinary measures.

“The Rivers State Police Command reaffirms its commitment to professional integrity and assures the public that any personnel found violating the principles of service will be held accountable,” the statement concluded.
