Super Eagles Captain Troost-Ekong Hails CAF Verdict On Libya Airport Saga

On Saturday, Super Eagles stand-in captain, William Troost-Ekong, lauded the Confederation of Africa Football (CAF) for its verdict over the boycotted Libya vs. Nigeria game.

In its verdict, CAF awarded three points and goals to Nigeria and fined the Libya Football Federation (LFF) $50,000 over the abandoned 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier.

Following the verdict, Troost-Ekong took to his official X handle to say that the move by CAF was justice served.

He stated this verdict has further brought the team closer to their participation in the AFCON 2025 games.

He said, “JUSTICE: CAF awards three points and three goals to Nigeria. Libya fined $50,000. Plane was diverted 300 km from scheduled airport even when the pilot told them he was low on fuel. One step closer to our target AFCON 2025.”

News About Nigeria recalls that the Super Eagles had refused to play the game in Benghazi on October 15 over ill-treatment by the Libyan authorities.

The players and officials were left stranded at an airport for over 13 hours. The facility was about 250 km away from their destination following the diversion of their flight.

The team was abandoned by the Libyan authorities with no access to food or water.

After a probe by the disciplinary panel of the CAF, it slammed the Libyan Football Federation (LFF) with the sum of $50,000.

The decision was made public on Saturday in a statement signed by CAF’s Chairperson of the CAF Disciplinary Board, Ousmane Kane.

In the statement, Kane noted that the decision to award Nigeria the points was taken after findings by the disciplinary committee it set up to look into the matter, found Libya guilty of the inhumane treatment meted out to the Nigerian senior men’s football team.
