Ahead of Saturday, October 26, 2024, local government elections in Kano State, the state government has announced a restriction of movement across the state, News About Nigeria reports.

According to the state, the decision is part of security measures for the local government elections.

The directive was made public in a statement signed by the Commissioner of Information, Baba Halilu Dantiye, on Friday.

According to the statement, the restriction is expected to last from midnight until 6 p.m. on election day.

In the statement, the commissioner explained that only those involved in essential services, including election officials, security personnel, and journalists with valid accreditation, would be exempted from the restriction.

The statement partly reads, “The restriction of movement is a precautionary measure to guarantee the safety of lives and property during the local government elections. We urge the general public to comply with this directive and cooperate with security agencies. The government is committed to ensuring a smooth electoral process, and we count on the support of the public to make this possible.”

Dantiye also urged residents in the state to exercise their civic rights peacefully and to avoid any actions that could disrupt the election.

He also noted that security agencies have also been placed on high alert across the 44 local government areas, and checkpoints have been established to monitor compliance with the restriction.

Meanwhile, a Kano State High Court in a shocking turn of events on Friday sacked all the 44 Chairmanship and councilorship candidates of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).

The court also ordered that the new candidates be selected from the party faction led by the recognised State Chairman, Dalhatu Shehu Usman.
