Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State on Thursday announced the approval of the N80,000 minimum wage for workers in the state, News About Nigeria reports.

According to the governor, the payment of the new minimum wage, which will commence this October, will include local government employees.

Speaking on the new decision to pay the N80,000 minimum wage, the governor stated that it is a reflection of his administration’s commitment to workers’ welfare, as promised during his campaign.

Mbah made the announcement on Thursday following a meeting with the Enugu State Minimum Wage Implementation Committee, headed by Head of Service Kenneth Ugwu, alongside labour leaders.

He wrote, “Today, I’m happy to announce a new minimum wage for workers in Enugu State, reflecting our fidelity to their welfare.”

The governor also emphasised the importance of motivated workers in achieving the state’s economic goals and reducing poverty, saying, “Our commitment to improved workers’ welfare runs deep and is rooted in the understanding that an inspired workforce is crucial to our economic targets.”

On his part, Comrade Fabian Nwigbo, Chairman of the Enugu State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), expressed gratitude to the Governor for prioritising workers’ welfare, calling the new wage “a great one for Enugu workers.”

He further noted that previous minimum wage announcements often led to delays in implementation, but this time the amount exceeded the national minimum wage.

Nwigbo also appreciated the governor, promising that workers in the state would continue to play their part in the growth of the state.
