Insecurity: Reps Summons Wike, FCT Police Commissioner

The House of Representatives has summoned Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), to address the escalating security concerns in Abuja, News About Nigeria reports.

The invitation extends to Olatunji Disu, the FCT Commissioner of Police, and Adeola Ajayi, Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS).

These officials are required to appear before the House committees on FCT, police affairs, and national security.

The resolution was passed during Tuesday’s plenary session after Ismail Dabo, a representative from Bauchi State, raised a motion of urgent public importance.

Dabo mentioned a personal tragedy involving his aide, Nimah Sulaiman, who was kidnapped and murdered by ‘one chance’ operators in Wuse 2 on October 17.

Despite paying the ransom, Sulaiman’s life was taken.

Dabo stated that the growing use of unregistered taxis is a conduit for criminal activity, adding that FCT residents are now living in fear due to the rising insecurity.

The House unanimously adopted the motion, with Speaker Tajudeen Abbas putting it to a voice vote.

Meanwhile, Wike has threatened beggars in the city that they will be arrested if they are found on the streets starting next Monday.

The Minister gave the warning at Katampe during the flag-off ceremony of the construction of the access road to the newly flag-off judges’ quarters.

Speaking on the decision to evacuate the beggars, the Minister stated that their presence on the roadside is “embarrassing,” as they are now the first that outsiders see when they come to Abuja.

While noting that the presence of roadside beggars is a poor reflection of the city, the Minister stated that they are also a threat to security.
