Nigerian activist and lawyer Deji Adeyanju has confirmed that singer and internet personality Darlington Okoye, popularly known as Speed Darlington or Akpi, is currently detained by the Nigerian Police Force in Abuja, News About Nigeria reports.
According to Adeyanju, Speed Darlington was arrested in Lagos last Friday and subsequently transferred to Abuja, where he has been in custody.
Adeyanju disclosed that the arrest stems from a complaint filed by Grammy-winning artist Burna Boy, though specific details of the complaint have not been made public.
Adeyanju shared on his social media, stating, “We just spent the last 30 minutes with Speed Darlington, and he narrated how he was arrested in Lagos Friday last week, moved around, and eventually brought to Abuja and has been in detention since then. Petition against him was written by Burna Boy, we can confirm.”
In response, Burna Boy took to social media with a cryptic post on X (formerly Twitter), writing, “Who’s missing?”—a comment that, though coinciding with news of Darlington’s detention, remains unconfirmed as related to the situation.
Meanwhile, Darlington’s mother, Miss Queen, has appealed for his release.
In a heartfelt video, she claimed Burna Boy and his team came to her son’s residence to “pick him up” after he posted a video alleging personal accusations against Burna Boy.
She emotionally pleaded with Nigerians to help her beg Burna Boy to forgive her son, describing him as her “one and only son.”
“I’m begging my fellow Nigerians, please everyone should help me to beg BurnaBoy… Forgive him, please,” she said. “This is me, Darlington’s biological mother. I am begging. He is my only son, forgive him.”
As of now, the police have not issued an official statement regarding Speed Darlington’s arrest or the ongoing investigation.
