Oyo Confirms 245 Suspected Cholera Cases, One Death Recorded

The Oyo State Government reported 245 suspected cholera cases from January 1 to October 7, 2024, with 23 confirmed cases and one fatality, News About Nigeria reports.

Commissioner for Health, Dr. Oluwasherimi Ajetumobi, shared this information on Tuesday during a press briefing in Ibadan after the weekly Executive Council meeting.

She noted that the single death involved a patient transferred from Lagos, while nine patients receiving treatment at the Olodo Infectious Disease Center in Ibadan are showing positive signs of recovery.

“A total number of 245 suspected cases of the dreaded cholera disease was reported between January 1 and October 7, 2024, with 23 cases confirmed while only one death was recorded during the period.

“The only death recorded was a patient brought from Lagos. Nine patients, currently on admission at the Infectious Disease Center, Olodo, Ibadan are responding to treatment and will soon be discharged,” she said.

In addition to discussing the cholera update, Ajetumobi announced the government’s approval request for N210.243 million as a counterpart fund for the upcoming mosquito net campaign, supported by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

She explained that the fund would facilitate logistics, planning, and distribution of 5,670,644 mosquito nets across Oyo’s 33 Local Government Areas to combat malaria, particularly in vulnerable populations such as children under five, pregnant women, and the elderly.

Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Wasiu Olatunbosun, outlined several cultural events approved for the remainder of 2024.

These include the World Twin Festival in Igboora (October 12), the Yemoja Festival in Ibadan (October 10–27), and the grand finale of the Omilere Alaragbo Festival in Oluyole Local Government (November 17).

December will feature the Oluyole Festival at Mapo (December 10), the Omituntun Cultural Carnival (December 10–12), and the Aso-Ofi Festival in Iseyin (December 4–5).

The state will also host the first-ever Ogbomoso Global Cultural Carnival from December 14 to 24, aiming to unite the Ogbomoso diaspora worldwide.
