Akwa Ibom Set to Swear In Newly Elected Local Government Leaders

Following the conclusion of local government elections in Akwa Ibom State, preparations are underway for the swearing-in of newly elected Chairmen and Vice Chairmen, News About Nigeria reports.

The inauguration is set for Monday, October 7, 2024, in the Banquet Hall of Government House, Uyo.

Governor Umo Eno announced the upcoming ceremony during a church service at All Nations Christian Ministry International in Eket.

He stressed the need for a swift transition to allow the new officials to immediately begin work on community development projects across the state’s local government areas.

“Election results are being finalised, and we will swear in the new Chairmen tomorrow at 8 a.m. I want to extend our gratitude to those who have served—they have done well,” Governor Eno said, noting that the transition timeline aligns with federal directives, ensuring that newly elected officials can begin receiving allocations promptly.

“The window we negotiated with the Federal Government was till October, and this is October. So we need to quickly swear in those chairmen so that they will start receiving their allocations and work for their people,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) secured a huge victory, winning 30 out of the 31 chairmanship positions, with the All Progressives Congress (APC) winning one seat.

The results of the October 5 election were confirmed by the Akwa Ibom State Independent Electoral Commission (AKISIEC) on Sunday.

A statement from Enobong Uwah, Secretary to the Akwa Ibom State Government, confirmed that the Governor would preside over the swearing-in ceremony in the presence of invited guests.

With the inauguration, the new Chairmen and Vice Chairmen will officially take office and begin serving their communities across the state.
