The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Anambra State has rejected the results of the local government council elections held on Saturday, citing irregularities in the process, News About Nigeria reports.
In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday, Chief Chigozie Igwe, the PDP chairman in Anambra, expressed strong dissatisfaction with the conduct and outcome of the elections, which saw the ruling All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) claim victory in all 21 local government councils and 326 wards.
Genevieve Osakwe, Chairman of the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC), had declared the elections free, fair, and peaceful.
However, Igwe dismissed these claims, describing the exercise as a “charade” and insisting that PDP had fully participated in the election, unlike other parties that boycotted.
He stated that the party was now analysing the election details and would challenge the results.
“They gave us one month to prepare for the election, during which we sold forms, screened candidates, conducted primaries, and campaigned. However, on election day, ANSIEC sent materials and officials selectively, and no results were released in several areas, including Zikdton Primary School, Nza Ozubulu, where I personally voted,” Igwe said.
Igwe said that the PDP would fight to protect the autonomy of local governments in Anambra, ensuring that local government funds are used for community development.
He warned that any chairman found misusing local government funds would face prosecution.
As the leading opposition party in the state, the PDP, he said, would stand for the people and uphold the principles of governance.
“Local government autonomy has come to; we will make sure any chairman who misuses local government money is prosecuted and sent to jail. “As the leading opposition party in Anambra, the PDP is going to stand for the people and ensure that the principles of layers of government are respected,” he added.
