Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) carried out a late-night raid on private hostels at Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (UDUS), resulting in the arrest of several students, News About Nigeria reports.
Sources informed newsmen on Saturday morning that the EFCC raid occurred in the Kwakwalawa and Gidan Yaro areas of Sokoto, where numerous students were detained.
According to students, EFCC officials arrived at their hostels around 4 a.m. and indiscriminately arrested many students.
As of now, the EFCC has not issued a statement regarding the operation or the reasons behind the arrests.
This is not the first time EFCC operatives have raided schools at midnight.
In February, EFCC operatives arrested students of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) during a pre-dawn operation.
Students were taken from off-campus hostels in the Orita Obele and Road Block areas around 2 a.m. during a raid led by EFCC officials from the commission’s Benin Zonal office.
Recall that the EFCC boss Ola Olukoyede ordered that sting operations at night be stopped in all the commission’s commands shortly after the arrest of 69 suspected internet fraudsters in Ile-Ife, Osun State, by operatives of the Ibadan zonal command of the EFCC in October 2023.
“The chairman gave the directive in Abuja on Wednesday, November 1, 2023, in reaction to the arrest of 69 suspected internet fraudsters in Ile-Ife, Osun State, by operatives of the Ibadan zonal command of the commission.
“Already, many of the suspects duly profiled by the command have been released, while profiling of suspects yet unreleased will be completed, without further delay.
“The commission wishes to assure the public that it will not relent in its adherence to the rule of law, in the exercise of its mandate,” he said.
